Time is money, a very commonly used term in business. But when disaster strikes the term really does mean that every second a business is not fully operational is costing somebody money, in extreme cases their livelihood.
As part of a recent survey 4000 businesses of all sizes were contacted in London and asked about emergency plans should the business experience a fire, suspected bomb, a chemical incident or other reasons leading to the need to evacuate personnel. The results were concerning:
- 83% of the SME’s had no written plan, 20% of larger business also didn’t have a plan in place.
- 10% of those that had a plan hadn’t tested it or trained their employees who to implement the plan.
The vast majority of companies don’t seem to consider the affect of an incident on their business. The statistical evidence makes for scary reading:
- 80% of businesses without a tested BCP are forced to close within 12 months of a fire or a flood.
- 43% that have a disaster never fully recover, they lose customers, good faith and maybe key employees.
- 50% suffering a major computer outage close within 5 years. Ask yourself how much do you rely in your computer systems?
- Less than 50% of businesses in the UK have any sort of BCP.
And finally….
- 58% of organisations in the UK were disrupted by the events of 9/11, 1 in 8 were severely affected. That’s over 50% of organisations disrupted by the affects of just one event.
